I am a mostly self-taught photographer, 45 years of age, with no particular education or background in the arts, living and working in Fort Collins, Colorado. Although being captivated by photographs from an early age, I didn’t begin pursuing photography until digital technology made it practical and affordable to do so. I acquired my first digital camera in 2006 and embarked on a time- and cost-intensive learning curve, on which I remain to this day. Fortunately, at some point, I realized that the images I was producing on paper more or less lived up to the vision I had for them in my mind, and a threshold was crossed. My goal is to stay true to my own vision of the world and capture as much of it as possible for my own enjoyment and for that of anyone else interested enough to look.
MY ARTIST’S STATEMENT
Photography is special. It possesses an almost magical balance in the arts between reality and interpretation. Err too far on the side of the former, and you produce mere documentation – you may as well be a journalist. Err too far on the side of the latter, and you produce make-believe – you may as well be doing special effects. But in the middle there exists a fine balance, wherein an image can embody both the recognizable, real world experienced by everyone on a day-to-day basis, and the hidden, sublime nature that underlies this reality as seen and captured by an artist. This is special, and it is not easy to achieve. I sometimes think of the well-known quote from Minor White – “One should not only photograph things for what they are but for what else they are.” Perhaps this is what he meant, in at least one aspect. In any case, I strive to convey this fine balance through my images so that you hopefully will see it as I do every time I look through my camera’s lens.
